Terra Restaurant and Bar

24 Sep

This new Mexican restaurant has been open 4 months and managed to slip by me! It is a jewel. It’s location on 6th and National is only short hop from its competition like La Perla and Botanas. But those two places are really no competition for Terra because they are not in the same league.

Terra is small and low key (not a food factory like the other two), the owners run the place and they make everything to order so it is super fresh. We talked to one of them and he said “if you don’t order it, we don’t make it”. So you wait a little longer for the food, but it is so worth it. And there are no unidentifiable chicken parts at Terra! The owner also told us they hand pick all their produce at the local market every day or two.

The proof was in the tasting. I do not eat salsa, but C. loves it and he said ”it’s the best I’ve had in Milwaukee”. We had the guacamole, and, while I tend to prefer not a lot of extra stuff in mine, my friend S. said in her opinion it “was the best in Milwaukee”. Two “best’s” from people I trust. You could tell they made it on the spot in the kitchen. Freshly chopped avocados, tomatoes, jalapenos, onions and cilantro with lemon juice squeezed over top. Yum.

Then we proceeded to over order. The Queso Fundido is spectacular in my opinion but you need to like cheese. Lots of yummy cheesy goodness with spinach and chorizo. C. had shrimp soup and I had the nachos. The downside to the nachos was the chips got a little soggy by the end, but they were still delish.

If you get a margarita, go for the $9 version. They hand squeeze the limes for the top shelf option instead using of a mix. S. gave me this little nugget because she asked them the difference.

I used to think Cempazuchi was the only gourmet-ish place to go for Mexican in this city, but I am adding Terra to the list!

And last but not least, if you do not like Mexican for some odd reason, they have a nice selection of burgers and they serve breakfast all day!

Great write-up, Susan. And I’m honored to have made your review!

Hi Susan – I finally got to check out Terra last night and absolutely loved it. I agree with Sandy’s comment about the guac. I think it was the best I’ve ever had! I went with your recommendation on the margaritas too and it was definitely worth the extra couple bucks. We had fish tacos and carnitas tacos and you could taste the difference in the quality of the food vs. some of the other bigger Mexican restaurants in town. Yum!!
