Joey Gerard’s

6 Sep

I had the opportunity to eat at the new restaurant from The Bartolotta Group – Joey Gerard’s – in Greendale for one of their “practice dinners”. I think it holds a lot of promise for a solid new dining experience in Milwaukee. When the sister restaurant opens in Mequon, later this month, it will be a welcome addition to that area which suffers from a dearth of good places to eat.

The atmosphere is spot on to a classic supper club. It is like a cozy lodge in the north woods complete with a moose head over the fireplace. Lots of wood, leather seats, dim lighting. It is not fancy, yet it is at the same time.

There was a sign that said “Drink like it’s 1958” in the bar and they mean it. Classic cocktails like a Pink Lady, Rob Roy, Manhattan and Sidecar are featured.

The menu is what you’d expect but more. A variety of relish trays abound served on Lazy Susan’s. And fancy ones with items like summer sausage, braunschweiger, deviled eggs, Merkt’s cheddar cheese and butter pickles. Yum!

They have a great selection of starters like oysters rockefeller, shrimp dejohnge, bloody mary shrimp cocktail, escargots and DJ’s popovers which are filled with Carr Valley cheddar cheese.

As for main courses, there were also a lot of options . Baby back ribs, veal picatta, chicken kiev, steak diane, trout almondine, pan-friend perch, even lobster tails, to name a few. And of course there are charcoal fired steaks galore, pork chops and lamb chops.

I will refrain from commenting on the food we sampled in detail, after all it was a practice dinner. What we tried was very good, with the potential to be great once they get a little more time under their belt. That said, the veal chop C. had was spectacular! And I finished the night with a grasshopper which was the perfect minty goodness to cap off a very nice meal.
